Cartoon Book and Paper and Magazine Recycle!Create!

T-Rex loves to read cartoons. Every Sunday, he eagerly retrieves the Sunday paper, eager to read the new comics.   Sometimes, he can even read them all by himself.  While I have nothing against cartoons as a medium, some of the humor is not appropriate for my five-year-old.

I decided to use the comics from the Sunday paper to make him a custom comic book.   All I needed was the Sunday paper and a cheap composition book.

I cut the cartoons apart and glued them into the book.

T-Rex enjoys being able to read the cartoons over and over.  I feel better about the content he is reading, and as a bonus, the book is much easier to keep in order than all those big floppy papers.

This month's challenge from Recycle!Create!  is to make something for or with your children using paper, newspaper, or magazines.  Learn more about the Recycle!Create! project .

Deer mask made from a paper towel tube

With Mommy busy taking care of a new baby, T-Rex has been making some fun of his own.  This morning, he came up with a new project which conveniently fits with our theme of card board tubes at Project: Recycle Create.  It was probably also inspired by the raccoon mask he made as part of our mini-nature museum several weeks ago.

Supplies: Paper plate
Two pieces of yarn about 1 foot      (30 cm) long
                Paper towel roll
Packing tape (Glue would be another option, I think.)

1. Cut off part of the plate to make space for your nose and mouth.  Cut eye holes. Cut tabs just above the ears to tie on the string.

2.  Cut your paper towel tube in half, and tape the two halves to the paper plate to look like antlers.

3.  Tie the yarn onto the tabs.

There you have it, a nice two-prong buck!

5 Ways to Use Cardboard tubes, from my 5-Year-Old

Happy March!  I am very excited to again be participating with a great group of bloggers to bring you Project: Recycle Create.  This month we are working with card board tubes.  I was building a stash in preparation for doing "something" creative when my five-year-old walked in with a whole pile of inventions.  My task oriented side was almost annoyed, when I realized that he had not only done my assignment for me, but had come up with some pretty brilliant ideas!

Here are T-Rex's top projects for cardboard rolls.

A great pretend toy.  The clear plastic material is shelf paper remnants.

This is a moving toy.  Simply add a star sticker or drawing, then roll it off the bed.  Use glow in the dark stickers or paint, and you can create a realistic meteor shower!

Who doesn't need a place to keep their favorite stickers?  You can guess what kind have been popular at our house lately.

Another great pretend toy, and T-Rex's favorite.  You might substitute packing tape for the shelf paper remnant and paint these.   Even pretend binoculars present a wonderful new way to look at the world.

This is my personal favorite.  I plan to pull it back out and do some experimenting.  If we hit on anything especially interesting I'll share.  If not, maybe your child will enjoy just playing like T-Rex did.

So, what's your favorite idea?  Most of us have a study supply of cardboard rolls, so check all the great ideas from my co-hosts.

If you have your own ideas, link them up!  Later in the month, I'll share a few of my favorites.
